(1) To be fair and because each encyclopedia has a different format, we chose two popular and well-known ones: Total Baseball (now out of business) which listed all players and selected statistics and The Baseball Encyclopedia available every year and arranged by season.

(2) There is two sites we know of that freely offer baseball statistics that you can download: Retrosheet and The Baseball Archive. The best of the two is Retrosheet, a nonprofit organization.

(3) We chose the MLB site because there really is no other with all the players and all the years where you can do some calculations. Other sites are basically online versions of printed encyclopedias where the best you can do is search.

(4) Obviously a computer but thatīs a given. The same is true for the other products listed here except for the printed encyclopedias. Baseball Oracle can run without being connected to the Internet but to get updates, a connection is required.

(5) Some other DBMS (Database Management Systems) are Visual FoxPro, FileMaker and Paradox. All cost $100 to $300 and all require the knowledge of database structure as well as SQL or other programming language.
